The Donut Mill, Woodland Park. Colorado

The Donut Mill Specializes in homemade donuts – they make the fillings, the toppings, and the dough – they hand cut them, cook them and put it all together to make the perfect donut. But, alas, this is an ice cream blog, not a donut blog. The Donut Mill serves Blue Bell Ice Cream, and specializes in ice cream-donut sandwiches ande sundaes. Don had donut sundae with root beer float ice cream, which caught the root beer flavor pretty well. I had Oatmeal Cookie ice cream (vanilla ice cream with oameal cookie pieces).

The shop had a nice seating area with pictures from Woodland Park before it was developed. It also had old tools for making donuts, including some very old balances and things that could be rolled over dough to cut a row of donuts. Customers in the shop (like us) were allowed to play with the old tools. .

We enjoyed chatting with our server about changes in Woodland Park over the years and even discussing the process of making donuts. It was a fun visit.

In the area: There are plenty of interesting things to do in Woodland Park and Colorado Springs. We spent a few days here. I cover the two we did today here.

Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center, Woodland Park, Colorado – before going here I was not sure if it was a place for kids or for adults. While there were plenty of things for kids, I felt the place was aimed at adults – much of it was over my head. While it was not a large place, it incorporated videos, models, interactive exhibits and sign boards about a plethera of dinosaur topics – there really was something for everyone.

The Dinosaur Resource Center does archeological digs and research to expand what is known about these prehistoric creatures. With this knowledge, they make and sell casts and develop exhibits for schools and museums around the world. There is a window through which visitors could watch folks removing bones from the rocks they were found in and figuring out how retrieved bones fit together. Other workers were painting casts that would probably end up in a museum somewhere.

I enjoyed exploring this place – if you or your child have an interest in dinosaures, this is a must visit place.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado Springs, Colorado – this is an awesome zoo! My absolute favorite animals there were the cute baby and attentative mom gorillas. The baby would run off and play, but frequently returned to mom for cuddles and to nurse – rare to see in captive animals, but so captating for humans to watch. There was a sign board that explained what they did over three generations to get the gorillas to this point – there success is very easy to see!

Whereas my favorite were the gorillas, the zoo also took particluar in their giraffes. They were fun to watch from multiple levels. I also enjoyed boisterous hippos which liked to loudly exercise their voices while they walked in and out of the water. The zoo also had snakes and alligators which moved little, but I was glad they were in cages.

This is a great zoo, which I highly recommend for everyone to visit. It has lots of hills to climb, but the wonderful exhibits make it all worth it.
