Exploring Watervliet: Ice Cream Delights and Shaker History

[ad_1]

On the Farm, Watervilet, New York

On the Farm is not on a farm, but there is plenty of farm equipment of the grounds to look at. The ice cream is not homemade, but it is from different producers so there is a nice variety. We arrived on a beautiful summer day and found a very busy parking lot. Many folks at the walk up window were ordering chicken sandwiches and other food for lunch. I wan only interested in ice cream, so I chose a “Farmetti” of lemon sorbet covered with raspberry:vanilla twist soft serve. It sounded like a strange combination and it sort of was – but I enjoyed it nontheless.

There were plenty of tables to eat at, so we sat down and enjoyed our treats and then walked around admiring the farm equipment.

In the area: Shaker Heritage Society, Watervliet, New York – Shakers: a celibate group of Christians that embrace communal living, technology, equality of sexes and races, and shaking/dancing/speaking in tongues during their worship services. This fascinating denomination had over 5000 believers before the industrial revolution. Started by Ann Lee, Shakers acquired new members by converts and raising orphans – they did not have children of their own.

The Shaker Heritage Society honors this interesting group of men and women and keeps their memory alive. Our visit started in their main worship area with the original, stark, stadium-like pew seating and an open area for worship dancing and shaking. Also in this building is a gift shop and a interesting museum with plenty of information about their life style. Among other things they made brooms and while the men and women were equally valued, they each did different steps in the broom amking, They also developed new technology to make the process easier. Outside we walked through their gardens and other open buildings (Many were closed today). Allow two hours to get through the Center, barn and gardens.

Attached to the Shaker Heritage Center is a natural area with a boardwalk and walking pathes. This worth a visit while you are visiting,
